Recognizing the power of the Internet and social media, governments around the world have sought to restrict the free flow of information online or to use digital technologies to restrict the rights of their own people. At the same time, companies are collecting increasingly sophisticated – and increasingly personal – information about their users. Especially in light of recent revelations about government surveillance in the United States and around the world, companies face growing pressures to prove to their users that they can be trusted with the most sensitive data.
What the Center is Doing
The Center initiated a project in 2014 aimed at making business practices in the information and communication technology industry more respectful of individual privacy and free expression – both in companies' commercial operations and in their relations with governments.
